Hi, I am Moto, short for Motoki.

I created this website to help people learn Japanese, experience Japan more deeply, and enjoy real conversations—beyond sightseeing, toward genuine connection.

Having lived roughly half of my life in the United States, this work is my way of giving back to those curious about Japan and to those navigating life across cultures.

Professional Background

I spent 26 years at Nike in product creation and product marketing, learning how ideas become products through design, storytelling, and collaboration.

After leaving Nike, I stayed in Portland Oregon and to use that experience as a bridge between Japan and the U.S., connecting people through language, culture, and creative thinking.

Independent Work & Small Business

Alongside my teaching work, I am an independent creator and small business owner.

I run two brands: Nippon Strokes and Shakebu.

Nippon Strokes is a design-focused brand centered on Japanese calligraphy and typography. Through modern design and storytelling, I create products that make Japanese culture more accessible.

Shakebu grew from my passion for fishing and community. As the founder of the salmon fishing club Shake-bu, I work with fellow anglers to build a brand that makes fishing fun, accessible, and stylish.

Teaching & Education

Teaching is at the core of what I do.

I teach Japanese and English, focusing on real conversation and cross-cultural communication rather than textbook perfection. As a former exchange student, I am especially passionate about supporting Japanese students and professionals preparing for international experiences.

I also give lectures and workshops for Japanese high school students before they study abroad, sharing practical insights on language, mindset, and cultural understanding. Email for inquiry about lessons and lectures.

私は人生の約半分をアメリカで過ごし、その経験を活かして 日本とアメリカをつなぐ活動をオレゴン州ポートランドでしています。

職歴

Nikeで26年間、商品企画・商品開発・プロダクトマーケティングに携わり、アイデアを形にするプロセスを学びました。

独立活動・スモールビジネス

現在、個人クリエイター／スモールビジネスオーナーとして活動し、
Nippon Strokes と Shakebu の2つのブランドを運営しています。

Nippon Strokesでは、書道とタイポグラフィを通じて日本文化を現代的に表現した商品を販売。
Shakebuは、サーモンフィッシングクラブ「シャケ部」の仲間と一緒に釣りを楽しく、身近で、スタイリッシュにすることを目指しながら、オリジナル商品の展開をしております。

教育・言語指導

日本語と英語を教え、雑談力と異文化理解を重視しています。
