[Learn Japanese] Lesson 7-I am going to Tokyo

Lesson 7 Fundamentals

• Goal:

  Learning one of the Japanese joshi particle “e” and “ni” in order to say a phrase such as “I am going to Tokyo”, the conversation includes direction of “where to”.

• What:

  Joshi is a Japanese particle that helps to connect with words and give meaning. “e” or “ni” can be used to describe “where to”.

• How to use:

  Add Joshi “e” or “ni” after the place you are going to.

  Tokyo e or Tokyo ni/とうきょう へ or とうきょう に

  Adding the verb go=iku/ikimasu will complete the sentence.

  eg. Tokyo e ikimasu. Tokyo ni ikimasu

Example Phrases

Tokyo e ikimasu.

とうきょう へ いきます。

I am going to Tokyo.

*Tokyo ni ikimasu will do the same thing.

Uchi e kaerimasu.

うち へ かえります。

I am going home.

New Words

iku/ikimasu=go

*Japanese has the respectful language that you use to speak to older people or someone you don’t know. Ikimasu is a polite version of the word iku. It can also mean that future tense like “will go”.
