What is Motareru(もたれる) in Japanese?

Meaning

  • Word Type: verb

  • Usually the noun is stomach. But it omits.

  • Used in food/dining conversation

There are few meanings. But what I am going to explain is the one that your stomach is being “motareru”

“Motareru” means that the food is sitting in your stomach heavy. It’s not digesting smoothly.

Tense types:

  • “もたれてる/motareteru” for current condition.

  • “もたれた/motareta”. for the past tense.

  • “もたれそう/matoresou” for future forecast like “it seems like it’s going to”.

Example Phrases

Because I ate that big cake, it’s still sitting in my stomach.

あの大(おお)きなケーキを食(た)べたから、胃(い)がもたれた。

ano ookina keki wo tabeta kara, i ga motareta.

Wow this looks like my stomach is going to get damaged badly

えー。すごく(胃が)もたれそう。

e-. sugoku (i ga) motaresou.

When to use “motareru”?

This happens more frequently, when you get older (haha). I used to eat hamburger and fries for lunch and be able to still each dinner as normal. But now, if I eat that type of food, I am fine to just skip dinner.

Or If I go out for drink at night and eat out till late, I know what’s going to happen the next morning.

If you have any other phrases, please send it to me. I can check them out. If you want me correct it, I can do that as well.
